In a defining moment for a new generation of African filmmakers, Beninese director and producer Sprints Gboko has been awarded anDoctor Honoris Causa in Cinema, Audiovisual Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, marking a rare recognition in an industry.
The distinction was conferred on April 30, 2026, by the École Supérieure des Métiers d’Arts et de Culture (ESMAC-HWENDO), during an official ceremony presided over by Dr. Florent Eustache Hessou.
At just 33 years old, Gboko stands among the youngest recipients ever documented in the field of cinema, underscoring a rapid rise driven by both creative output and technological vision.
Over the past years, he has built a prolific body of work, with more than 30 productions spanning films and series. Titles such as Avitikpamba, The Return of Tassi, Danhomey Vampire, and 8.19 Billion reflect a filmmaking approach that blends local storytelling with ambitious visual experimentation.
His work is also distinguished by a growing integration of artificial intelligence, positioning him at the intersection of cinematic creation and emerging technologies – a space increasingly shaping the future of global content production.
The ceremony gathered leading figures from Benin’s cultural scene, including filmmaker and comedian Éléphant Mouillé, alongside well-known artists such as Sambieni, Maman Grâce, Vieux Caïman, Masta Cool and Dah Soglo, highlighting the recognition of his influence within the industry.
During his remarks, Gboko dedicated the honour to the memory of “Tonton J,” who passed away on April 23, 2026 – a quiet but poignant tribute that added personal weight to the occasion.
Beyond the recognition itself, this moment signals a broader shift. As African cinema continues to evolve, figures like Sprints Gboko are helping redefine its direction – not only through storytelling, but through the integration of new technologies that are reshaping how films are imagined, produced and distributed.
With the creation of the Global Cinema Registry and a growing portfolio of projects, Gboko is positioning himself not simply as a filmmaker, but as part of a new wave of creators bridging art, innovation and digital transformation.
