Biography
Isabella Cortés was born on March 17, 1982, in Valencia, Spain. She grew up in a coastal neighborhood where her father worked as a fisherman and her mother owned a small bookstore near the harbor.
As a child, Isabella spent countless afternoons inside the bookstore reading novels, poetry, and philosophy. These early literary influences shaped her fascination with storytelling and human psychology.
At the age of sixteen, she discovered cinema through the films of European auteurs. Inspired by the emotional power of visual storytelling, she began experimenting with a small handheld camera borrowed from a school media club.
After finishing high school, Isabella moved to Madrid to study film direction at the Escuela de Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM). During her studies, she became known for her experimental short films that combined dreamlike imagery with quiet emotional tension.
Her early career was far from easy. For several years she worked as an assistant director and script supervisor on low-budget productions while writing her own screenplays at night.
Her breakthrough came in 2013 with her debut feature film The Sea Between Us, a deeply personal drama that premiered at several European film festivals. Critics praised her distinctive visual style and her ability to create emotionally intimate stories.
Over the following decade, Isabella established herself as one of Spain’s most promising contemporary filmmakers. Her films often feature slow, contemplative pacing and rich symbolic imagery.
Despite international recognition, Isabella prefers working with small crews and independent producers, believing that creative freedom is essential to authentic storytelling.
She currently divides her time between Madrid and a quiet coastal village near Valencia where she writes most of her scripts.
Career
Isabella Cortés built her reputation within the European independent cinema scene before gaining broader international recognition.
Her films are known for their strong visual composition, atmospheric cinematography, and psychologically layered characters.
Many of her stories revolve around characters confronting unresolved past experiences or searching for personal redemption.
She frequently collaborates with the same cinematographers and composers, creating a consistent artistic identity across her films.
In addition to directing, Isabella also writes most of her own screenplays, allowing her to maintain complete creative control over the emotional tone of her projects.
Her work has been featured in numerous international film festivals including Venice, San Sebastián, and Berlin.
